Using smart card scanning to ease consumer frustration at checkout

DoorDash is one of the largest food delivery platforms in the world, operating in over 30 countries and generating more than $100 billion in annual revenue. With over 10 million food delivery transactions happening globally each day, the company plays a critical role in the global logistics and food delivery ecosystem.

The Challenge

As Doordash rapidly scaled, it became the prime target of sophisticated fraud rings using stolen credit cards to place fraudulent orders and even cash out through fake restaurant storefronts. To mitigate these attacks, DoorDash relied on traditional fraud prevention methods, account blocks and reviews, deactivations, card blocklists, and automated rules. While these strategies reduced fraud, they often resulted in false positives, blocking legitimate users and introducing friction at a critical moment: checkout. The trade-off? Lower customer satisfaction and higher churn.

The Solution

To improve fraud detection without sacrificing user experience, DoorDash partnered with Dyneti to implement a more targeted solution: Real-time card scanning powered by deep learning.
When a transaction is flagged as risky, users are prompted to scan their physical credit card. This step verifies that:

  • The card is real (not a screenshot or altered image)
  • The user possesses the physical card and not just a stolen credit card number

This approach acts as a lightweight, smart risk-based authentication layer, eliminating bad actors while reducing friction for genuine users.
